Microsoft Issues Urgent Virus Fix

. 3/02/2009

A virus affecting millions of computers world-wide has resulted in Microsoft rushing out an emergency fix for its Internet Explorer web-surfing software.
Criminals have been directing victims to websites that then infect machines with hijack code that leaves them open to having passwords and bank details stolen.
Microsoft has now issued a 'critical-rated' security update, which people with the Windows Update feature will get automatically.
Thousands of websites have already been compromised by the virus, which automatically infects machines that lack an earlier complicated Microsoft workaround.
Microsoft said it has seen attacks targeting the flaw only in Internet Explorer 7, the most widely used version, but has cautioned that all other current editions are vulnerable.
Microsoft rarely issues security fixes for its software outside of its regular monthly updates, the last two being in October and 18 months previously.
